FINAL SKATE DECK YOOOO
Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Enter the matrix...NOT. Welcome to our Microscopic Metropolis!
BTW. I didn't have a handy camera with me, so you're going to have to deal with my shitty webcam. Sorry. ;(

Name: Flamber
Age: 99 days
Life Span: Unknown
Gender: Male
Diet: Fear
Abilities: Night Vision, flight.
Background Story:
As terrifying as it looks, Flambers are actually really friendly and helpful. They feed on fear, so their prey will become fearless, per-say. Despite the night vision they are gifted with, Flambers can't see very well during the day. Therefore they spend most of their daytime sleeping, waiting for the night to begin. Because of the way they look, Flambers are usually stuck with a bad rep, however, one species managed to see through that. That species is called Bunerg, and something very unique happens when these two cross paths.
When the Flamber latches onto the back of the Bunerg to feed, it releases a special liquid that helps the Flamber's wings complete. However, the liquid happens to be very sticky, so the only thing Flamber can do is take flight, along with Dremut. Now this isn't at all a bad thing, because out there lurks a fearsome beast, the Goblanator. The Bunerg are equipped with large legs, powerful enough to jump to incredible heights, which in turn the Flamber sprout ridiculously long wings from their back and enable both of them to fly to safety.
The Goblanator is the top predator around, solo Flambers don't stand a chance. But when attached to a Bunerg, they make a phenomenal team, and an epic escape. In fact, because they work so well together, they usually become awesome friends at the end.
Process:
Here's pretty much everything I did. The wiring was a PAIN...
And at the end one of the spikes from the hair broke off. :(

Practice makes perfect?

As for my shoe, we were supposed to subtract parts of the object, so I drew half my shoe? ./creativity fail! :

Mascot on Steroids
For New Media tools we were practicing with the pen tool in Illustrator, and grasping the concept of tracing stuff out.

Our assignment was to choose either a team logo from the NHL or NBA or NBL or NFL.
I chose the Florida Panthers (mainly cause it looked way badass):

I haz play fetch?
I took two different approaches for this assignment. It was annoying to figure out what part to trace first. I tried to tell myself to get the bodies of yellowish fur first, but then that led to me being annoyed at how much time is being wasted. So I went with tracing a huge black outline of the beast:

Second layer was the fur:

White fur:

... and finally the details:

I chose this because it looked challenging enough.
And I'm not gonna lie, it was. Well it was really time consuming and it had me debating against sharp corners or curvy corners... I didn't know which would look better. I guess you could say this is my like, rough? I really want to make it better, but only if I find the time to. You gotta deal with this for now!
Edit: Curious about how long it took to complete this? After starting over twice, I would say it took about 3.5 hours. Breaking it down to about an hour for each layer. I don't know if that's bad or good...
SUPER NEW EDIT! :
Spent a little more time on it, fixing a few things here and there and adding a bit more detail...

These colors look better

How do you trace a ninja?
Still life paintings - Just add water!
Today we got to play around with our water painting gear and I admit it was kind of fun. I never really painted before, but now I think it's pretty interesting.

Each table had an object to water paint, with a time limit of fifteen minutes, which isn't that bad. Interestingly enough, a lot of people didn't know how to water paint exactly, and I found myself in that situation! But monkey see monkey do, I looked around and played it cool (betcha didn't notice). ;)
Another disadvantage I had was the spot I was sitting at... the figurines were always facing away from me. So I totally had a blast painting their behinds. :(
So the first one my table had to paint... looked as if it was the hardest one. It was some robotic looking tentacle wielding octopus-like thingy with claws and many red eyes :

Rawrr? (it probably doesn't rawr)
The second item on the menu was... I have no idea. I should have taken pictures of them, darnit. Oh well. This one was like, a wierd thingy that looked like a spider with a huge mouth... (hey I tried!):

The third object rolled around, and this time it was more recognizable. Twas mister Spawn! But again, with the crappy view I got, I had to paint his back. I got a good part of his cape though, which I think is the best part of Spawn anyway:

And finally, the easiest looking thing to do was again, really hard, because how the heck do you paint white? Is there some kind of cheat code that painters enter on their water paper pads to make white actually visible? Or is it like, impossible? The grey areas are all supposed to be white. This is the red M&M dude by the way (his back anyway):

I don't know if it's me or not, but I think I'm noticing a slight theme in the way I paint. Meh, could be just me thinking too much. Anyway, enjoy!

DMA179 Assignment: Madreal... or MAD REAL? :D
So for this assignment we were supposed to research an artist's particular style and try to create a inspired version of our artwork from theirs.
I got assigned Madreal, AKA Derrick Hodgson. You could check out his work out at www.madreal.com, or google his stuff up:

Not pictured: YOUR SANITY
Okay, so my first initial thought was WTF. At first I thought I clicked the wrong link or something, but that's what his work is like, and after looking at it for awhile it began to make me laugh. His style is kinda really simple, as if he doodled everything up and added a bit of color to spice it up. Another thing I noticed were the small eyes and weird blob like bodies he gave everything.
So here is my first version:

Rough

Final
And here's my second version:

Rough

Final
So I kinda stuck with the whole simple and doodle-like look. I sketched it all out and scanned it and played around with it on Photoshop. Man I love bubbles. :D
EDIT: Hmm... I can't figure out why you can't click on the images to make em bigger, so if you wanna view them... check my flickr.

Design Elements are NONTOXIC!
The point of this activity was to create meaning by using a design element to depict the following:
-Positive and Negative
-Movement
-Chaos
-Playful
-Stability
By using various design elements that we got lectured about in class, we were suppose to try to convey those words in the best way we think possible (visually, of course).
These are the final five that I chose...(yes I know they look easy)

Those are bubbles by the way ^

These are the rough drafts that I did for the above five:

I wasn't too sure if we were supposed to have 15 sketches or rough drafts on each page for each meaning, so I decided to play it safe and did it all (never hurts to have more?).
Overall this took me like 3 hours... it took me awhile to think of ideas. And I also played with all sorts of different things, not just a pencil.
I used:
-coloured water paints
-pencil
-marker
-acrylic paints
-pastels
-charcoal
-ruler?
After this exercise, I found a new love for pastels... =)
EDIT: Ew so apparently I did most of the assignment wrong due to some unclear instructions... the entire thing is supposed to be done all in black marker. This is 2009 people, where's the colour love?

digging up old treasures?
After constantly looking for a song on my laptop, I came across some of my old stuff. You know when you look back at certain things and go... WTF? Yeah. Enjoy.
Actually, I think some of them are not so bad.
These were some pictures I took, and played with in photoshop... mostly colour isolation:

This was a wallpaper I made from the character Kagami from the anime Lucky Star. :D I used Illustator for this one:

These are some photo repairings I did in photoshop:
Hmm...I know there's more, but I can't find them, so I'll post more up when I do!
Feeling SOUR?
So I was on a random youtube video watching spree when I ran into this amazing music video by this Japanese group called "SOUR". The song is called "Hibi no Neiro" (Tone of Everyday). The most incredible thing about this video is that it is all done by webcam. Insaneee. You can imagine how long it actually took to finish...
EW WHY IS IT CUT OFF?

a NEW challenger!
Mister Bunny was lonely so I made him a friend. I went through the same process as Mister Bunny, took me about an hour to complete. Illustrator is fun to play in. :D
Sketch

Head

Body

Face

Mister Bear!

Okay, so the bear deserves to be a mascot too. Incase you haven't noticed, I kind of tinkered around with the theme of the blog and I think it makes it all a little more original.
